How to Plan Your Brand’s App

You want to design a perfect app for your brand, but don’t know where to start? ReallyAppy have a guide for you.

Features Galore

Brainstorm with your team. Think of all number of possible features your app could have. Remember at this point, these are just ideas, and not necessarily going to be suitable for an app, however, don’t hold back, and have fun with features.

List out features, scribble them on a big piece of paper or draw them on a mind map. Whatever gets them down on paper and records them. What does your company do that you can put in an app – think of actions: getting, creating, comparing, locating, annotating, hearing, searching, exploring, watching, viewing…

When you’ve exhausted all the features and you have a list like a Swiss Army Knife that would need a lorry to transport, turn your attention to the other side.

Target Audience

Hopefully your brand has already identified its brand target audience. You know who your customers are, who is a repeat purchaser, where you gain most sales. Now funnel that information a bit further – what sort of phone user are your customers? (You may wish to consider some market research towards this if you’re serious.)

What is unique about your target audience, or different about their needs? Are they looking for vouchers, or further details? Do they enjoy what you do as part of a hobby, is it purely brand loyalty? Do they like following exact instructions or do they need some inspiration? Are they likely to make small or large purchases, frequent or infrequent, regular or every now and then? Do they use your services as an individual, or as a family, or a business? Will they complete particular actions on a repeat basis?

Get a good picture of the most common traits of your target audience, so three or so really strong attributes of your customer and their needs.

Informed Decisions

With your data collected, begin to match up your features to your target audience. Be ruthless with your features (don’t lose the ideas completely, just slim your features down to a maximum of three).

Keep slimming the ideas down until you have a perfect fit of features for your target audience.

Use the information to create a sentence that describes the app, such as:

“A recipe search tool for Mums who have children between 3 and 5 years old.”

“A bird identifier for walkers in Scotland.”

If you can condense what your app is in a short sentence, you have your basis, and your features, and your target audience nailed. Then you can go forward with your app.

Don’t forget though – if you want to add new features to your app, repeat this process of brainstorming and approval to achieve your best outcome.
